Is Buying an Old Car a Bad Idea?

A lot of people searching for cars will consider the newest and prettiest model on the lot while others will drift toward older vehicles, primarily for monetary reasons. There are a lot of reasons to purchase either a new car or an older, used car and downsides to both. a car parked in a parking lot

The downside of a new car is that it is typically more expensive. On the other hand, older cars are often less safe than newer cars, especially if they are more than a decade old. While you can save money on purchasing an older car, it is important to take safety into consideration.

Why Vehicle Safety Matters

Car manufacturers are equipping new cars with new safety features all the time. These may include lane assist and automatic braking. Many manufacturers are including multiple airbags to increase the safety of both drivers and passengers alike.

Hidden in the statistics about fatalities, you'll find certain proof that new cars are safer. In the mid-70s, the number of fatal accidents exceeded 40,000 accidents each year. As safety features have evolved, the number of driving fatalities is just over 33,000 each year. Although that’s still too many deaths, that’s a remarkable decrease.

This statistic is a vital piece of information that proves new cars with safety features save lives. With that in mind, if safety is a concern to you while you are looking for a car, you should buy a new car instead of an older model vehicle.

Car manufacturers often go above and beyond when they include safety features in vehicles. Even in many base models, car manufacturers are rolling out new safety features. In the past few years, auto fatalities have decreased due to these new features. Plus, newer cars have up-to-date designs to protect you on the road.

It is important to do your research and compare vehicles when it comes to safety, gas mileage, safety rating and more. You can usually add safety measures to your vehicle in order to increase the safety of your vehicle and even save money on your auto insurance. The safer your vehicle, the less likely you are to file a claim which in turn and lower your auto insurance rates.

Speak with an insurance agent and shop around about insuring whichever vehicle you choose. Make sure that you settle on the best vehicle for you and your family, old or new.
