Understanding the Basics of Medicare Eligibility

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older. It also provides coverage for younger people with certain disabilities and those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

At Morgan Marrow Company, we’re committed to guiding you through the complexities of Medicare eligibility. Medicare on Chalk board

What Does Medicare Cover?
Medicare has four parts, each providing coverage for different health care needs.

  • Medicare Part A—Hospital insurance covering hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home healthcare
  • Medicare Part B—Medical insurance for doctor visits, outpatient care, medical equipment and some preventive services
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)—An optional bundled plan offered by Medicare-approved private insurers that replaces Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and may offer extra coverage, such as vision, dental and hearing
  • Medicare Part D (Medicare prescription drug coverage)—An optional prescription drug plan  that individuals can join in addition to Original Medicare

Who Is Eligible for Medicare?
Generally, you are eligible for Medicare at age 65. Younger individuals with specific disabilities or conditions like ESRD or ALS can also qualify. You must be a US citizen or a legal resident living in the US for at least five consecutive years prior to the month of applying for Medicare.

If you or your spouse should have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least ten years (40 quarters), you may be eligible for Medicare Part A at no cost at age 65. People who haven’t met this criteria may still be able to receive Medicare Part A by paying a monthly premium.

If you’re 65 or older and still employed, your options for Medicare can vary depending on your employer’s healthcare coverage. In some cases, Medicare can work alongside your existing employer’s coverage.

Medicare Enrollment Periods
The initial enrollment period starts three months before the month you turn 65 and continues for three months after your birthday month.

Under specific circumstances, you may be eligible for special enrollment periods triggered by some life events.

If you miss your initial enrollment period and aren’t eligible for a special enrollment period, you may be able to sign up for Medicare coverage during the annual general enrollment period between January 1 and March 31.
